Your Small Marketing Team: How To Decide What To Outsource In Your Business

With a small marketing team, you relish in the control you have over your business. 

I mean, this is what you dreamed about right? To be your own boss and to have control over your work. 

So why in the world would you want to outsource? 

The truth is, outsourcing can actually help your small marketing team have more control and be more productive. And you don't have to outsource everything.

Why Should Your Small Marketing Team Outsource?

You may still be thinking, “There’s no way I could give up that type of control.” 

But outsourcing key business tasks has many benefits for your small marketing team. 

Here are some of the main reasons why you should outsource:

  • It allows you to focus on your core business. Think of all the small tasks you do in a day. How many of those take up too much time? How many of them do you really dislike doing? By passing those tasks on to a freelancer or agency, you can free up your time to focus on the more important aspects of your business.
  • It makes you more productive. Really, it does. When you have someone else working on the things that you aren’t great at or just really hate to do – or that you don’t have the expertise to do – you become more productive. You work faster and are just all around happier.
  • It makes your day more flexible. There are some business tasks that need to be done daily. Checking and responding to emails or interacting on social media are a couple of examples. By outsourcing these simple tasks, your schedule can be much more flexible throughout the day. Things that need to get done at a certain time can be done by someone else.
  • It gives you peace of mind. Passing on certain tasks to someone who is much better suited for the job can enhance your business. And once your business starts rising, it will give you peace of mind that outsourcing was the right decision.

How To Decide What Tasks To Outsource

There are many tasks that you and your small marketing team do each day; some of them may even be so automatic to you that you don't even realize you do them. 

So how do you decide which tasks you and your team want to distribute to other people? 

Here are some questions to ask yourself: 

  • Which tasks do I dread doing? You know those tasks. The ones that the thought of doing, fill you with dread. Those are a great place to start outsourcing.
  • Are there tasks that I tend to procrastinate on? While you may not completely dread these tasks, they’re the ones that you tend to put off. These are also great candidates for being outsourced.
  • Which tasks do I do repeatedly? Look for tasks that are done consistently. Maybe they don't add any real value to your business or aren’t worth your valuable time, but must still be done. Hand these off to someone else and move on with your day.
  • Are there some areas that I may not have the most knowledge in? Be honest here. Are there some areas of your business that just aren’t your strong points? Do you think there is someone else who could do a better job then you and your small marketing team could? If so, outsource it.

Do what you do best and outsource the rest. If you're still unsure where to start outsourcing, here are some ideas:

  • Sending and answering emails. A virtual assistant can easily take over your inbox for you, leaving just the important ones for you to answer yourself.
  • Content creation. If writing is not your strong suit, find a freelance writer to take over your blog and guest posts. Do you need press releases written and distributed? Hire a writer to do those as well.
  • Article research. Even if you don't want to completely hand over your content creation, you can hire someone to do the preliminary research for you. Outsourcing parts of a whole task still gives you more time to work on other things.
  • Email marketing and newsletters. Creating newsletters often takes time. If this is something you and your team don't have the time for or don't enjoy doing, handing it off to someone else will be a much better use of your time – especially if you don't know copywriting.
  • Social media setup and management. While a necessity in the marketing world, social media can also be a huge time suck. If you find you are one of those people who end up spending countless hours browsing Facebook or scrolling through Instagram, you may want to just avoid social media altogether and let someone else manage your business accounts. 
  • Pay-per-click campaign set-up and management. Do you actually enjoy setting up marketing campaigns? If not, outsource your AdWords or Facebook advertising and monitoring to someone else.
  • Affiliate and joint venture recruitment. Are you looking to partner with other businesses in your niche? Hire someone to filter through the many online businesses out there to find you the right affiliates and joint venture partners.
  • Graphic design. If images are not your – or anyone else on your small marketing team’s – strong suit, hire a graphic designer to create your promotional graphics for your blog, social media and other marketing material. 
  • Podcasts and video creation. While you should still be the featured speaker in your podcast or video, you can outsource the scriptwriting or the production editing to someone who is more knowledgeable in that area.

Final Thoughts

Outsourcing certain tasks in your business doesn’t have to mean your small marketing team is giving up control. 

Quite the opposite actually. 

Outsourcing can give you back control over your business as a whole, giving you more time to focus on tasks that really matter and that you actually enjoy.
